It's simple.

Reading gives me an escape.

Life isn't always the best. I have days where I just want to curl up in a ball and disappear, and being able to read allows me to. I also have a pretty big imagination and I love living inside my head, so reading helps me expand on that as well.

Reading is the one thing that I can depend on to put me in a better mood. Instead of just sitting around and wallowing in my misery, I crack open a book and immense myself into a story. Give it a few minutes and I'm good to go.

Reading makes me feel smarter. No joke. When I stopped reading during my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I felt dumb. I felt like my vocabulary had gotten worse and I wasn't performing my bests in certain subjects. But reading doesn't only make me feel smarter academically, but socially. I'm not always the best when it comes to talking to strangers, but if we're on the topic of books, I don't care who you are, I will never shut my mouth. Discussing books is one of my strong points, and I thank reading for that.

Reading gives me a hobby. I'm not one to do many things outside of school or on my free time. I don't play sports, instruments, or really participate in extracurriculars, which leads many people to ask me "what's your favorite thing to do outside of school"? And you know what I say? Reading is my favorite thing to do outside of school. If I told you how many series and standalones I read in middle school, you'd be shocked. If I told you how many hours I stayed up reading a book on a school night, you'd think I'm crazy. What can I say? It's my favorite thing to do.

And lastly, reading makes me feel like I'm apart of something. Finding friends and connecting with them over our love for books is amazing. Being able to talk to authors about their books and how they made you feel is amazing. Having people say that they loved a book you recommended to them is amazing. Being apart of a loving community is amazing.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm a book worm, a book lover, a bibliophile, whatever you want to call it. Yes I'm the girl who would sometimes read rather than talk (unless it's about books). Yes I'm the girl who pulls out her large ass book on a crowded bus. Yes I'm the girl who gets super attached to characters and cries when they die. I'm a girl who loves to read more than anything. And I'm proud of it.

Why do you love to read?

til' next time,
xo, kathlyn
